Babo, Ann Arbor

I was pleasantly surprised to discover Ann Arbor’s own mini Eataly on East Washington Street today.  Local entrepreneur Sava Lelcaj has already graced Ann Arbor with her successful restaurant Sava’s and she appears to have another hit on her hands with Babo.Think of Babo as a high end deli, coffee/wifi hangout, gourmet takeout and grocery wrapped up in one.  Craft beers on draft and an extensive cheese & charcuterie/meat counter round out the upscale vibe.

That vibe could best be described as sophisticated urbane when I strolled in.  Two techie hipsters with their Macbook Airs lounged at the long communal table while I ordered a Macchiato and took in the surroundings.  Several imported and exotic chocolate bar selections were artfully displayed right next to the barista, a nice touch but I had to pass.   A sleek bar with stainless steel stools was adjacent to the coffee bar.  Fresh, organic produce was artfully displayed at the front of the store alongside various other delights including 6-packs of Pellegrino and local fresh apple cider.

Staff were very friendly and not afraid to engage you with offers of help and assistance. Exotic foodstuffs and canned delights were presented on gleaming stainless steel shelving straight outta The Container Store.  Color me impressed.
