I found myself daydreaming while the non-stop 70′s soundtrack played in the background of this pleasant new restaurant on East Washtenaw. My waitress brought me back to reality with a steaming bowl of salmon chowder as We May Never Pass This Way Again moved toward the bridge. Despite Seals & Crofts’ soothing recitations, I actually did find myself returning to the Blue Wolf Grill twice in the last week. Wholesome, healthy and flavorful food has that effect on me.
During my first visit the aforementioned salmon chowder was perfectly balanced with just the right amount of cream with chunks of salmon, potatoes, onions and carrots competing for the attention of my spoon.
The owners have transformed a former Taco Bell into a comfortable and casual lunch and dinner spot on this stretch of Washtenaw just west of Hewitt road. Reportedly, they will be expanding their offerings to include breakfast in the very near future and a liquor license is also in the works.
Their daily lunch combo includes either the soup du jour or a salad of your choice as well as a half sandwich. I chose their Smoked Whitefish Panini and loved it. The Whitefish salad was lightly smoked and was served on grilled light rye with Monterey Jack cheese. For $8, I’d call this combo a bargain and one of the better deals available in the area.
On another occasion I tried their Michigan Salad with their home made poppy seed dressing. The salad included dried cherries, toasted walnuts, blue cheese and a fresh mesclun mix. Perfectly tossed and dressed, this salad was outstanding. My dining partner opted for the chili cheese fries; a decadent version including plenty of melting cheese and a very flavorful dollop of chili cascading down the pile of fresh cut fries.
