I had intended to check out the Macrina Bakery on 1st Avenue until the rain started about two blocks into my brisk morning walk in search of a warm croissant and a deep cup of dark roast coffee. As the rain continued to fall I quickened my pace and changed my planned route, abruptly turning onto 4th Avenue to take cover under some storefront awnings on the corner.  About a block in the distance was Lola. Nope, this isn’t some long lost love story – it’s just the latest in my “Best Breakfast Experiences” series.

Lola is one of several fine restaurants owned and operated by Seattle restaurateur Tom Douglas, most of which are situated in the Belltown neighborhood, east of the Space Needle.         Lola had been on my radar as it had been singled out on Chef’s Feed by at least two local chefs for their fantastic and sturdy breakfasts. I didn’t fully realize that it was a hotel restaurant until I had arrived nor that it was billed as a Greek/Mediterranean restaurant by night.

After being seated around 8:45 AM I slowly began to take in my surroundings and was impressed by the dark wood booths, long curved bar in the front foyer and attentive service. I ordered Lola’s signature breakfast dish, a hearty yet refined turn on the classic Eggs Benedict with olive oil & rosemary smashed redskin potatoes.

When the dish arrived and I had finished my first two bites I knew right then and there that this would be a trans-formative breakfast experience.  The hollandaise sauce was perfect with a hint of heat and citrus which delicately cascaded over the perfectly poached eggs.  Douglas’ recipe employed a very hearty portion of shaved Ham in place of the traditional Canadian Bacon and the anchor to this dish was a homemade whole wheat English Muffin.   Ah-maz-ing.  The potatoes also shined with an intense spice and herb mix encrusted into the skins thanks to a high heat sear.

Before long the rain began to disperse and broken clouds above the Emerald City revealed spots of blue skies with intermittent sunshine.  I went forth fortified for another day on my Western Vagabond Experience.

If you find yourself in Seattle and are searching for a breakfast to remember I heartily recommend Lola.
